$22m Linwood pool set to make a splash

Linwood’s new pool complex Te Pou Toetoe will open ahead of schedule, with construction set to finish ahead of time and within budget, Christchurch City Council has announced.

Friday, 1 October has been earmarked for the opening of the $22 million facility to the public.

“We’re very pleased that work has progressed faster than expected,” says Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events, Nigel Cox.

“Despite the considerable challenges of recent times, the project team have delivered the facility ahead of the original target opening, and within budget. In preparation for the opening we’re currently recruiting and training the team who’ll be working there.

“A great community facility is more than just a building – it’s the team, how they provide for the needs of the community and make it an enjoyable place to visit.”

Both the design and construction have progressed extremely well, said Apollo’s National Design Manager and Project Director, Steve Hastie.

“Delivering community facilities is something we truly enjoy, and it’s awesome when all involved are focused on delivering an amazing facility that not only optimises value for money, but delivers what will be such a fun and inclusive facility for the community,” Mr Hastie says.

“Working with Christchurch City Council in a partnership approach has contributed significantly to making this project a success.”

Linwood Councillor, Yani Johanson today welcomed the opening date announcement.

“It is great to see the much anticipated facility coming close to completion. It is a true testament to the hard work of so many people who have advocated for this pool over the past 20 years to see it become a reality,” Cr Johanson said.

“I am sure it will makes positive splash in the local community as people have been looking forward to it being open. I also want to acknowledge the stellar work of the project team – despite the COVID-19 challenges it has remained on budget and ahead of time.”

It’s been a year since the first sod was turned on Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool. The facility on the corner of Smith Street and Linwood Avenue will have a multi-use 25-metre lane pool, a deep water splash pool, a family spa pool, a learn-to-swim pool, and a pool and water deck for toddlers.

There will also be a kitchen and two community rooms, while outside there will be picnic tables, tennis, basketball and multi-use courts, cycle stands, parking and plenty of open areas for all ages to enjoy.

A formal opening with guests will take place on the afternoon of Friday 1 October with opening activities planned over the weekend.
