Ninety-five new homes are set to provide stable housing for around 320 people in Whangārei in what is Kāinga Ora’s biggest regional social housing development.
Northland has a high level of housing need, with hundreds of people on the local housing register. This development helps meet that need by providing safe, long-term homes for whānau who need them most, said Regional Director, Jeff Murray.
Mr Murray said the homes will make a meaningful difference to the community.
“Having a safe place to live gives people stability and a chance to plan for the future. For many whānau, this is a big step forward,” he said.
The development includes a mix of apartments and standalone homes, including 14 ground floor homes designed for people with accessibility needs.
Partnership with local hapū Te Parawhau has been an important part of the project. Te Parawhau supported the development from the beginning, including blessing the whenua and gifting names for the neighbourhood and its shared spaces.
A central community space provides a place for residents to connect, host gatherings and support one another. Outdoor areas include green space, native planting, fruit trees, a vegetable garden and safe places for children to play.
The homes were designed by Phoenix Properties and built by Loveridge Builders, with more than 120 tradespeople involved over the 36-month build.
