A local state of emergency has been declared in Canterbury as prolonged, heavy rain causes flooding across the region.
The Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group said this morning that heavy rainfall had resulted in severe flooding across Canterbury.
It has declared a state of local emergency in Canterbury, extending emergency powers across the entire region.
“Ongoing dangerous river conditions and further flooding are expected,” it said.
“Slips and floodwaters will continue to disrupt travel, making some roads impassable and possibly isolating communities.”
Advice from the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group:
- STAY AWAY FROM FLOODWATER. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.
- DO NOT TRAVEL IN FLOODED AREAS unless absolutely necessary. Never try to walk, swim or drive through flood water. Many flood fatalities are caused by people attempting to drive through water.
- If water enters your home, turn off the electricity to avoid short-circuits sparking a fire.
- Check on your neighbours and help anyone who might need assistance if it is safe to do so.
- If life, health or property is in danger, call 111.
