Northport Group’s new chief executive, Rhys Jones, has been welcomed by Patuharakeke into the community with a pōwhiri at Takahiwai Marae.
During the pōwhiri, Patuharakeke speakers welcomed Mr Jones and his family to Te Poupouwhenua and Taitokerau.
Speaking at the event, Chair of Northport Group shareholder Northland Regional Council, Pita Tipene said it was only by engaging with people kanohi ki te kanohi that one could truly get a sense of what they would bring to the community.
“Rhys’ experience and achievements are impressive and speak for themselves, but the pōwhiri provided an opportunity to get to know the person behind the CV. What stood out was his humility, warmth and genuine commitment to people,” said Chair Tipene.
“I hope that Rhys, Yvette and their sons Raphy, Ryland and Brodie felt the warmth of the welcome they received and will soon feel at home in Taitokerau. We believe Northland is the top region, built on strong communities, strong relationships and people who are committed to serving others.
“Northport has an important role to play in the future of our region, and Rhys clearly understands that sustainable economic growth and strong communities go hand in hand. Ultimately, success is measured by the benefits it delivers for our people”.
Mr Jones thanked Patuharakeke for the welcome.
“There is something incredibly special about being welcomed into a community in this way. My family and I feel honoured and privileged and we look forward to settling into Taitokerau, and enjoying all the benefits of living in this special part of the world,” he said.
At the conclusion of the pōwhiri, Patuharakeke marked the retirement of outgoing Northport chief executive, Jon Moore, presenting him with a kete of taonga to mark his 19 years at the port’s helm.
The gifts included harakeke, reflecting its connection and importance, especially for Patuharakeke; a taonga made from kauri, which also carried a story and connection to the area; a pōtae that had been woven that morning; and chutney from the local kura.
