Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has described his attendance at Saturday’s funeral of Pope Francis as a “tremendous privilege”.
Mr Luxon joined leaders from around the world in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican to farewell the popular pontiff, with around 200,000 people in attendance and a worldwide television audience of millions.
US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined Prince William and other royals leading more than 160 official delegations for the event.
“An honour to represent New Zealand at the Vatican for the funeral of Pope Francis, and to remember a life of service to his faith and the people who share it,” Mr Luxon shared in an online post.
The Prime Minister told 1News it was a “tremendous privilege” and “really special” to be a part of the monumental event.
