Auckland 2023 sports fund opens

Auckland Council has launched a new contestable funding round for the Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund (SRFIF) for 2023.

The SRFIF is a 10-year, $150 million fund provided through Auckland Council’s 2021-2031 10-year Budget. For the 2023 funding round, $13.4 million will be available for planning and development of sport and recreation facilities.

Council’s Acting General Manager, Active Communities, Dave Stewart says the multi-million-dollar investment will enable more Aucklanders to participate in community sport and recreation activities.

“Sport and recreation continues to be a priority for Aucklanders of all ages with many people wanting choices when looking to be active. This fund looks to address sport and recreation infrastructure shortfalls and respond to changing preferences by Aucklanders,” he said.

“Its focus is on creating the best outcomes for the community while ensuring value for investment is achieved, all while getting Aucklanders, especially tamariki, more active”.

The SRFIF is contestable and open to non-council organisations for significant facility development.

It has a focus on communities that are in the greatest need of investment and large-scale community sport facility development projects that can leverage additional investment.

The full eligibility criteria and funding priorities are explained in the Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund Guidelines.

The 2023 funding round will be open for Stage 1 applications between 14 November 2022 and 31 January 2023, with Stage 2 applications to be invited on 10 March 2023.

Funding decisions will be made by the relevant Governing Body committee in September 2023.
