Bomb scare at Christchurch Airport

The New Zealand Defence Force’s bomb disposal unit is attending Christchurch Airport this morning after a suspicious item was located around 8am.

“Police were made aware of an item of interest located at Christchurch Airport,” NZ Police said in a statement.

“The item was located in a bag at the screening checkpoint.”

The domestic terminal has been evacuated as a precaution, police said.

“Police are making enquiries and speaking with two people in relation to the incident.”

“The New Zealand Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit has been notified and will attend as a precaution.”

An airport spokesperson said no threats had been received at the facility.

Flights have been suspended while Police and NZDF carry out investigations.
