Tora Collective has taken out the Primary Sector Award at the New Zealand Food Awards in Auckland last night, netting gold for their Caught-to-Order Wild Crayfish.
New Zealand Food Safety Deputy Director-General, Vincent Arbuckle said Tora Collective’s model of coast-to-plate impressed the Awards judges.
“We are delighted to recognise Tora Collective’s outstanding progress in implementing crayfish stock conservation measures and respecting the harvesting season,” said Mr Arbuckle.
“Their winning Caught-to-Order Wild Crayfish is delivered next-day-fresh to customers seasonally and according to demand.
“The use of seaweed packaging harvested by the producer themselves demonstrates a holistic commitment to sustainability.”
New Zealand Food Safety is a long-time sponsor of the New Zealand Food Awards’ Primary Sector Award. New Zealand Food Safety works closely with Massey University of New Zealand to ensure that award finalists are not only producing first-rate food but also meet food safety standards.
The Silver award went to Re Probiotic Yoghurt (Natural), which unites farming practices and product quality; and the bronze to Waitoa Free Range Chicken Bone Broth, which demonstrated an excellent use of a low-value by-product.
Other finalists for the Primary Sector Award included Kiwi Sorbet Feijoa Sorbet and Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Ikura Caviar.
“I am always impressed by the calibre of entries for the Primary Sector category, and the variety of innovative products on offer to consumers that also show dedication to sustainable practices,” says Mr Arbuckle.
