Central Hawke’s Bay council reveals ambitious waste plan

Central Hawke’s Bay District Council has unveiled an ambitious plan to cut the waste of every resident by 50kg per year as part of its draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

The Council says up to 40% of the 5,725 tonnes of waste sent to landfill each year could be diverted.

“We’ve already reduced waste going to landfill by 18% over the past six years through working together as a district,” said Mayor, Will Foley.

“When you take into account that was through both Covid and Cyclone Gabrielle, it’s impressive.

“Now we need to build on that with this plan, navigating rising costs and increasing pressure on households, businesses and council infrastructure.

“The plan focuses on practical, affordable improvements, through working together to reduce our waste.”

The plan sets directions for the next six years. It includes targets to reduce waste to landfill from 440kg to 390 kg per person per year by 2031, increased diversion through Council services, and reduced unauthorised dumping to fewer than 35 incidents per year.

Mayor Foley says community input was essential and would shape the final plan.

“Reducing waste is a shared responsibility. We need to work together to find practical solutions that work for Central Hawke’s Bay,” he said.

“The WMMP is a direction-setting plan. Any significant changes to services or funding would be consulted on with community.”

Consultation is open until 18 May. Residents can make a submission online, complete a printed form, in person at the Council or at local libraries.
