Chatham Islands spreads gorse control program

Chatham Islands Council is helping residents to manage gorse, which it says is impacting both productive farmland and the natural environment.

To support land occupiers in managing the persistent weed, the 2025–26 Gorse Control Initiative is now open, offering herbicide only with a total value of approximately $30,000.

Eligible landowners and lessees can apply to receive Tordon Brushkiller XT and Slikka super penetrant, provided they can demonstrate planned control work and hold a current Growsafe certificate. Because this year’s funding is strictly for herbicide, applicants will need to undertake the work themselves or hire a contractor at their own cost, Council said in a statement.

Applications must include a completed form, maps showing gorse distribution, photos of affected areas, and evidence of current certification.

“There is the potential of having a trainer on the island in February (TBC), indicative costs are between $325.00 – $395.00 (incl. GST). If anyone is wanting to complete their Growsafe certificate, please contact info@chathamislands.govt.nz and we can forward your details on. Herbicide may be held by arrangement if Growsafe certification is required or requires renewal,” Council said.

“Initial control should focus on boundary and scattered plants, with block areas considered after these have been addressed. Some properties may require a site visit by Environment Canterbury Biosecurity staff.

“All herbicide recipients must complete their control work by 30 April 2026 and allow follow-up checks to confirm progress.”

Extended date for applications now closes 4pm, Thursday 5th February 2026 and can be submitted via email info@chathamislands.govt.nz or in person at the Chatham Islands Council office.
