Western Bay of Plenty Council has opened Community Emergency Hubs at Waihī Beach and Ōmokoroa for anyone who needs to evacuate or feels unsafe due to the ongoing severe weather.
The following hub locations are now open:
- Waihī Beach RSA, 99 Beach Road;
- Ōmokoroa Pavilion, 28 Western Avenue.
The hubs are intended for people who may need to leave their homes temporarily or who feel unsafe due to flooding, slips, or other weather-related impacts, the Council said in a statement.
“Basic kitchen facilities are available; however, no bedding is provided, so people should bring themselves and anything they need.”
“The Hubs are not set up to accommodate people overnight. If people require temporary accommodation, they are encouraged to phone Council on 0800 926 732 to discuss options.”
The Council says people are encouraged to use their judgement and move early if conditions around them worsen, particularly near streams, rivers, or steep slopes.
Council is continuing to work closely with Community Response Teams across the District, with additional assistance locations ready to open if required.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to continue reporting slips, flooding, blocked drains and other issues via 0800 926 732, or the Antenno app.
