Community to steer new Mount Maunganui parking plan

Tauranga City Council is looking to formulate a new plan to improve parking management in Mount Maunganui.

Community engagement is underway to gather ideas that balance the parking needs of everyone who lives, works, plays, and visits the area, the Council said in a statement.

Ongoing parking issues, including occupancy reaching 100% at peak times, has highlighted the need for a parking management plan, says
Parking Strategy Manager, Reece Wilkinson.

“We want to know what’s working well, what’s not, and what ideas you’ve got to make it work better. Whether it’s tried and tested solutions or out-of-the-box ideas, nothing is off limits,” said Mr Wilkinson.

“We’re open to suggestions, from time limits to yellow line markings in tight streets, and anything else that springs to mind, as long as it’s realistic.”

Council staff are focusing on the area from Adams Avenue, near Mauao, to Sutherland Avenue.

“If there are other areas in the Mount where parking is a concern for you, we’re still keen to hear about them too, along with any ideas you have to help us make things better,” Mr Wilkinson said.

Mauao/Mount Maunganui Ward Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Jen Scoular, says: “As a biker, my best suggestion is to get out of your car, but for those who need to drive, here’s the chance to have your say.

“I have heard some people comment that we don’t need to change what’s currently there, but let’s ask the community for feedback. As Mount locals, businesspeople and visitors to the area, this is your chance to share your views.”
