Community views sought on Kirkpatrick Park fitness pod

Hastings residents are being invited to help shape the future of Kirkpatrick Park in Camberley, with feedback sought on a proposal to establish a fitness container pod at the park.

The proposal follows a trial of the pod – a fully equipped, container-based gym (pictured) – last year, from where charitable M.E.K.E Foundation delivered free fitness classes to support health, wellbeing and recreational opportunities in the area.

The trial, which used a whānau-ora approach, aligned with Council’s Camberley Community Plan 2020, and helped reduce barriers to exercise and recreation, including cost, transport, and accessibility, by providing access to a local community gym.

With the trial now complete, the M.E.K.E Foundation has requested a three-year lease for a fitness pod at Kirkpatrick Park.

The proposal would provide an accessible space for physical activity and fitness training, adding to the range of recreational opportunities available at the park.

Hastings Councillor and Camberley Planning Committee member, Siiam Daniel said Council was keen to hear from residents, park users, and the wider community before making any decisions.

“Kirkpatrick Park is a valued community space that represents far more than fitness and recreation, it is a place of wellbeing, connection and belonging,” Cr Daniel said.

“This proposal has the potential to support all forms of wellbeing, connection and inclusivity, while complementing the park’s existing use and activities.

“Community consultation is central to this process, and I encourage residents to have their say so any decision reflects the needs and aspirations of the community.”

As Kirkpatrick Park is classified as a Recreation Reserve under the Reserves Act 1977, Council is required to publicly notify the proposal, invite submissions, and consider community feedback before making a decision.

Council encourages anyone with an interest in Kirkpatrick Park – including nearby residents, sports clubs, and regular park users – to review the proposal and provide feedback.

Consultation is open now at www.myvoicemychoice.co.nz. Submissions will close at 5pm Friday 5 June.
