The Department of Conservation (DOC) is urging whitebaiters to help keep waterways pest-free this whitebaiting season by following Check, Clean, Dry advice.
The season starts on 1 September, giving whitebaiters time to make sure they’ve got everything they need to check, clean and dry their gear “so pests don’t hitch a ride”, said DOC Freshwater Species Manager, Emily Funnell.
Freshwater pests like didymo, weeds and invasive freshwater clams can reduce water quality, clog nets and choke waterways, including whitebait habitats.
Ms Funnell says that moving from one river to another increases the risk of taking a nasty along with you.
“Ever since invasive freshwater clams were found in Waikato waterways three years ago, and last year at Lake Rotomanu, Taranaki, we’ve been encouraging whitebaiters in these areas to stick to one river for the whole season,” she said.
“But no matter where you fish in Aotearoa, always make sure you follow the Check, Clean, Dry advice and follow the whitebaiting rules. By doing this, you’re helping take the pressure off whitebait species and their habitat.”
DOC is also encouraging whitebaiters to ensure they have the right safety gear before the season starts.
“We want whitebaiters to have a fun time down at the river and get home safe. That means wearing a wader belt and life jacket, carrying two waterproof communication devices, fishing with a mate, and definitely not fishing from rocks where waves can wash over them,” Ms Funnell said.
