The Department of Conservation (DOC) is offering the opportunity for 10 postgraduate students to receive $15,000 each for research into the natural and social sciences.
DOC introduced the postgrad scholarship programme last year, receiving an impressive response with 82 applications. Ten students received scholarships for topics ranging from climate change impacts on the Fiordland marine food web to Covid tourism planning.
DOC’s Chief Science Advisor Professor, Ken Hughey said the scholarship recipients would play an invaluable role in the mahi to restore the health of Aotearoa New Zealand’s biodiversity.
“Strong partnerships between DOC and universities and robust, high-quality research are essential for meeting the nation’s biodiversity goals,” he said.
“I look forward to seeing applications with innovative approaches to natural and social science research. We want to be challenged by these students.”
To qualify for this year’s scholarship round, students will need to align their research to DOC research priority areas, which include biodiversity, introduced animals and plants, freshwater, marine and coastal environments, visitors and heritage, and climate change.
Applications for the scholarship are open to fulltime or part-time Master’s students enrolled at a New Zealand university or NZQA accredited tertiary institution, who plan to do research on a relevant topic in the 2022 academic year.
