The Department of Conservation (DOC) has received an application for a marine reserve at Hākaimangō – Matiatia (Northwest Waiheke Island).
As part of the application process, a two-month public submissions period opened on 20 January 2022. DOC is encouraging people to share their views on the application by providing written submissions before 20 March 2022.
The applicants, Friends of the Hauraki Gulf Inc., have proposed an area of 2,350 ha be protected as a marine reserve. The proposed reserve spans from Hakaimango Point to Matiatia Bay and extends seaward.
DOC Planning, Permissions and Land Director, Natasha Ryburn said it’s the first application DOC has received from a community group in quite some time.
“DOC’s role so far has been to facilitate the statutory steps under the Marine Reserves Act (1971) which includes supporting the applicant with the process and receiving all written submissions on the application during the public notification period.”
“Making a written submission is the best way to ensure your views can be considered as part of the decision-making process.”
Ms Ryburn says targeted engagement with tangata whenua including affected iwi, hapū and whānau is underway as part of DOC’s role in the process.
“We are seeking hui with iwi, hapū and whānau to gain a robust understanding of their views to help advise the Minister of Conservation.”
“DOC does not yet have a position on the proposal but aims to provide our advice to the Minister for Conservation before the end of the year. The job ahead includes analysing all written submissions and assessing the application against the requirements of the Marine Reserves Act,” she said.
Written submissions will be accepted until March 20.
