The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has filed charges against the former Chief Executive of a charitable trust, alleging he misappropriated just over $2.1 million from two trusts and a third entity which he was involved in.
The SFO alleges that, while Chief Executive of the Ngāti Tamaoho Trust, Matekino Marshall, misappropriated $547,408.
He faces three representative charges of obtaining by deception, one representative charge of accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose, and four representative charges of dishonestly using a document.
It is further alleged that, as Chairperson of the Port Waikato Community Health and Support Services Trust, Mr Marshall accessed a computer system for a dishonest purpose and misappropriated $1,454,895.
Mr Marshall also faces charges in relation to the alleged misappropriation of $120,000 from another entity, which was subsequently repaid. In addition, he is charged with using a forged document to maintain his VIP Black Card membership status at SkyCity Casino.
Mr Marshall has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He appeared in the Manukau District Court on 5 March and was remanded on bail to appear at his trial which is set down to commence on 26 July 2027. The trial is expected to last 6 weeks.
