Former Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, has been appointed Australia’s next Ambassador to the US based in Washington DC.
Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese said Mr Rudd had extensive connections in the US.
“In keeping with past practice of appointing experienced former ministers to significant diplomatic posts, the Government intends to appoint the Hon Dr Kevin Rudd AC as Australia’s next Ambassador to the United States,” Mr Albanese said.
“Kevin Rudd is an outstanding appointment, he brings a great deal of credit to Australia by agreeing to this appointment.
“As someone who has links to the global community in Washington DC, he will be a major asset.”
Mr Rudd will commence the posting early in the new year, replacing Arthur Sinodinos.
The appointment announcement comes after months of Mr Rudd, who currently heads up the Asia Society in New York, denying any interest in the Ambassador role.
