Sports organisations are being invited to apply for a share of $508,000 through Auckland Council’s Sport and Recreation Regional Programme Grant.
The grant aims to boost affordable access to sport and recreation activities for children, young people and inactive communities.
Chair of the council’s Community Committee, Councillor Angela Dalton says getting more Aucklanders participating in sport and physical activity will benefit Tāmaki Makaurau.
“Many tamariki and rangatahi across Auckland love participating in sports, physical activity and recreation. The grant aims to fund organisations that enable children and young people to develop skills, so they can enjoy sport and recreation activities now and into adulthood,” said Cr Dalton.
“We want even more young people to participate in sport and recreation, and sports organisations play a key role in achieving this goal.”
Applications for the Sport and Recreation Regional Programme Grant 2025 open on 10 March 2025 and close on 6 April 2025.
Auckland Council’s general manager Community Wellbeing, Kenneth Aiolupotea, welcomed sports organisations seeking operational funding for programmes that encourage Aucklanders to be active, to apply.
“Auckland Council encourages sports organisations including community groups, charities and not-for-profit organisations to apply for the grant,” he said.
“We particularly welcome applications from organisations that encourage tamariki, rangatahi, Māori and inactive communities to be more active, more often.
“The fund prioritises programmes with a regional scale, impact or reach.
“Costs applied for need to be associated directly with the expenses of running a programme.”
Who should apply? The Sport and Recreation Regional Programme Grant is open to community groups, including not-for-profit, charitable and voluntary organisations; play, recreation and sport ‘umbrella organisations’ with a region-wide mandate; regional federations or groupings of local or sub-regional sports code organisations; sport and recreation providers or advocacy groups; iwi and other Māori organisations active in the sport and recreation sector. The council recommends that organisations do not apply for the full cost of their programmes. Funding shouldn’t be seen as the sole funding source for a programme.
Key dates The funding round opens on 10 March 2025 and closes on 6 April 2025. Funding decisions will be made by the Community Committee in July 2025.
