Hastings is proving to be a powerhouse of emerging talent in Aotearoa’s arts and events sector, with two of the three national finalists for the Momentus Technologies Rising Star Award in the 2025 EVANZ (Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand) Awards hailing from the district.
Toitoi Hawke’s Bay Arts & Events Centre’s Sarah Terry (pictured, main photo), producer – community outreach, and Hastings District Council’s Ike Baker, Venue Manager for Tōmoana Showgrounds, have both been selected for their outstanding contributions to the industry.
Adding to the celebration, Toitoi has also been named as a finalist for Ticketmaster Small Venue of the Year, and Shane Cross, Toitoi’s lead technician, is a finalist in the VITEC Team Member of the Year.
Toitoi presenter services manager, Glen Pickering said the recognition was a powerful endorsement of the district’s investment in people.
“We are absolutely thrilled to see Toitoi and our team members recognised at this level. These nominations reflect the incredible mahi happening across our venues and the passion our people bring to their work every day. To have two rising star finalists from Hastings is a testament to the strength, innovation, and leadership within our teams. We’re proud to be shaping the future of arts and events in Aotearoa.”
Ms Terry had been instrumental in transforming Toitoi’s accessibility, education and outreach programmes, while Ike Baker had led the revitalisation of Tōmoana Showgrounds, building strong community partnerships and delivering high-impact events.

Shane Cross (pictured, above), a finalist in the team member category, was recognised for his technical expertise, leadership and mentorship, which the Council says have made him a cornerstone of Toitoi’s operations.
Mr Cross said the Toitoi team worked hard to make every event seamless and memorable.
“This nomination is a reflection of the incredible team I get to work with and the support we give each other,” he said.
“It’s an honour to be nominated alongside such inspiring colleagues,” said Ms Terry.
“This recognition reflects the collective effort of our team and our community. I’m proud to be part of a venue that leads with heart and purpose.”
The EVANZ Awards celebrate excellence across New Zealand’s performing arts and events venues. Winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony in November.
