Hastings District Council is mourning the loss of Chief Executive, To’osavili Nigel Bickle, who passed away unexpectedly at his home in Hastings on Saturday.
Mayor, Wendy Schollum said Council’s thoughts and aroha are first and foremost with Mr Bickle’s wife, children, grandchildren, wider whānau, friends and colleagues.
“This is devastating news for Nigel’s whānau and for the many people who knew and cared about him,” Mayor Schollum said.
“Nigel was a charismatic and visionary leader with enormous energy and an even bigger heart.
“He was incredibly generous with his time, his support and his belief in people. He cared deeply about our staff, our community and Heretaunga Hastings, and that was clear in everything he did.
“For those of us who worked alongside him, Nigel was much more than our chief executive. He was a respected colleague and friend, and a very special part of our Council whānau.
“Nigel guided Council through some of the most challenging times our community has faced. Through them all, he was always looking for the silver lining and the opportunity to build something better.”
Mayor Schollum said Mr Bickle had a deep commitment to public service and to improving people’s lives.
“He understood that local government is not only about policies, projects and infrastructure. It is about people, relationships and the communities we serve,” she said.
“His dedication to service, and his love for and commitment to Māori, Samoan and wider Pasifika communities, touched many lives.
“There will be time to reflect more fully on his contribution and the legacy he leaves. Today, we are grieving the loss of a very special person.
“His warmth, humour, generosity and extraordinary energy will be deeply missed.”
Bruce Allan will act in the role and is working with Council’s leadership team to support Mr Bickle’s whānau and Council staff, the Mayor confirmed.
