A new subdivision is now ready for houses to be built with the completion of groundworks at 244 Flaxmere Ave, Hasting District Council has announced.
The council-owned site is one of four being developed for housing in Flaxmere, and the occasion was celebrated at the weekend with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and also the official reveal of the new road in the subdivision – Whakaruru Crescent.
Hastings Mayor, Sandra Hazlehurst said it was exciting to have this site ready for new homes to be built – with room for up to 46 safe, affordable, quality houses.
“This development follows the first one that was completed at Tarbet St, just around the corner, where 17 sections were made available for first-home buyers and 18 were allocated for transitional housing,” the Mayor said.
“Providing homes for our people is a key priority for our council and work is underway to deliver close to 200 homes across four council-owned sites in Flaxmere.”
The celebration also included acknowledging the new road – Whakaruru Crescent, named after long-time Flaxmere advocate, Steve Whakaruru, who played a big part in the development of Te Aranga Marae.
“It’s wonderful to recognise a true Flaxmere champion in this way, and having some of Steve’s whānau join us at the celebration made it even more special.”
The subdivision is the second of four housing development projects in the suburb that
Government and Hastings District Council have been working on together, the Mayor said.
With the support of $11.5m Government funding from Crown Infrastructure Partners, Council is installing water and roading infrastructure at all three sites to support affordable, quality housing.
The homes, which will be built by development partners, will be accessible to first home buyers, through a range of home ownership pathways such as shared ownership, rent to own, affordable rental and market sales, Council said in a statement.
All the houses will be owner/occupier for a period of no less than five years from the date of settlement and will be a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom single and two-storey standalone, duplex and terraced housing, it said.
