Hipkins sworn in as new PM

New Zealand Labour leader, Chris Hipkins, was sworn in as the nation’s new Prime Minister today in a ceremony at Government House that lasted just a few minutes.

The 44-year-old former COVID-19 Response, Police and Public Service Minister was elected to lead the party and country on Sunday, following the resignation of Jacinda Ardern.

The new Prime Minister will be supported by Deputy PM, Carmel Sepuloni – the first person of Pacific Islander descent to hold the role – who was also sworn in at today’s ceremony.

Meanwhile, Ms Ardern ended her last official day as leader with a visit to the town of Ratana, north of Wellington.
