International win for Paihia water plant

A multimillion-dollar upgrade to the Paihia wastewater treatment plant has been recognised on the international stage at the 2022 IPWEA Australasia Excellence Awards.

The plant recently won the IPWEA Excellence in Project Innovation award.

The project was automatically entered into the Australasia Excellence Awards after winning the New Zealand IPWEA Excellence in Project Innovation award last year.

Far North District Council says the $6 million Paihia Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade was undertaken in 2020 to improve discharge quality at the Paihia oxidation pond.

“This was achieved by installing 552 bioshell reactors into the pond to promote biological processes that reduce ammonia levels to within resource consent requirements,” Council said in a statement.

The wastewater treatment plant is located in the Waitangi Forest northwest of Paihia and serves approximately 5,000 residents in Paihia, Waitangi, Opua and Haruru. During summer, the serviced population can exceed 11,000.
