Invercargill councillors check out museum rebuild

Invercargill City Councillors and members of the organisation’s Executive Leadership team have enjoyed a site visit and tour to check out the progress of the rebuilt of Te Unua Museum of Southland.

The Council says construction of both the western experience hall and the eastern building – which will house amenities including the cafe, offices, education, and retail space – as well as the foyer that will join the two, is rapidly progressing.

For the next few weeks, the team is lifting structural steel for the eastern building. Next on the agenda will be the installation of the roof, as well as the installation of the structure for the double-hulled waka, or te unua, that gives the museum its name.

A complete rebuild of the museum, it is expected to open to the public in late 2026.
