The corner site where Broadway meets Raihara Street in Kaikohe has been cleared to make way for the construction of a new library for the town.
Work began a week ago to demolish two vacant buildings occupying the site, with the former Save Mart second-hand shop the first to go. Far North District Council says the full demolition process will be completed by early September.
“Far North Holdings Limited has been appointed to project manage clearing the site and building the new library,” the Council said in a statement.
“A start date for the construction of the new build will be confirmed once the design phase is complete, which is expected to take around five months.”
Council says the town’s existing library will remain in Marino Place for much of the new build project.
“There will be a temporary closure when the new building has been finished and library services are ready to relocate to the new space.”
