Local history comes alive for Ōhura Primary School students

Students from Ōhura Primary School have enjoyed a special visit to the Taumarunui Rail Action Centre (TRAC), where they were welcomed by Ruapehu District Mayor, Weston Kirton and other TRAC members.

Mayor Kirton said it was wonderful to host the Ōhura students following the recent flash flooding that heavily impacted their community.

“These kids and their whānau have been through a lot over the past few weeks, so it was great to see them out enjoying themselves, learning something new, and having a few smiles and laughs along the way,” said Mayor Kirton.

The TRAC Goods Shed and Museum is home to a wide range of vintage machinery, historic rail and steam engines, carriages, rail memorabilia, and model railways celebrating Taumarunui’s rich rail and pioneering history.

Mayor Kirton said the museum was always a hit with young visitors because many of the displays are interactive and hands-on.

“The students loved being able to climb inside the old railway carriages, explore the machinery up close, and see the large-scale model railway operating,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to have community facilities like TRAC that help bring local history to life in a fun and engaging way for our young people.”
