Marlborough council kindy energy kits spark bright ideas

Marlborough District Council’s Environmental Education team has sparked a conversation about energy within local kindergartens.

Springlands Kindergarten was the first centre to use an energy kit created by the team, which is packed with activities and resources to support learning.

Tamariki used the kits to learn about types of energy and where it comes from. They used kit items including torches with batteries, hand-winding torches, pinwheels, a water wheel, a picture of the sun and some pretend food.

“These kits have been designed to get kids thinking about different types of energy, where it comes from and how it works,” said Environmental Educator Ramona Millen.

“They are a fun way to learn about how energy is created and where it comes from, encouraging children to make connections between things in their world and the importance of conserving energy where we can.”

Feedback from Springlands Kindergarten was that the kits had been an engaging way to spark conversations and thought processes for children, who had shown great interest and knowledge retention from the learning block.

The energy conversation is set to continue within kindergartens across the region, with support from the Enviroschools team, Ms Millen said.
