Marlborough has a new plan to set the direction for civil defence and emergency management across Marlborough over the next five years.
The Marlborough Emergency Management Group Plan 2025-2030 was formally adopted by Marlborough District Council recently.
Mayor, Nadine Taylor said the plan outlined how Marlborough Emergency Management would work together with iwi partners, emergency services, local government and community organisations to build a “disaster-resilient district”.
“This plan is an important strategic document delivered once every five years. It outlines how we as a region – through the integrated 4Rs approach of Reduction, Readiness, Response, and Recovery – will work together to be ready and to be prepared.
“With Marlborough exposed to both an increasing severity and frequency of natural hazards and risks as well as legislative changes, this plan establishes a coordinated framework.
“It will enable us to reduce risks, prepare communities for emergencies, respond effectively when we need to and support the long-term recovery of our region after severe events. That’s a when, not if scenario.
“At the heart of the plan is the vision that Marlborough is a disaster-resilient district that acts proactively to manage risks and build resilience in a way that contributes to the wellbeing and prosperity of all communities, whānau and individuals,” Mayor Taylor said.
The plan is the culmination of a collaboration led by Marlborough Emergency Management with input from key partners and stakeholders.
Emergency Services Manager Matt Kerr thanked all the partner agencies involved and those who had contributed to the development of the plan.
“We recognise that effective emergency management requires every person, organisation and agency working together under the principle of ‘He waka eke noa – We are all in this together’ and this plan embodies that.
“Some of the key elements of the plan include an increased emphasis on community engagement, improving the resilience of communities and increasing Marlborough’s readiness in conjunction with response planning,” Mr Kerr said.
