MFAT warns against text scam

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has issued a warning following the discovery of an SMS text message scam purporting to be associated with the Ministry.

“We are aware of an SMS text message scam impersonating the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which asks recipients to enter a code to access our services,” MFAT said in a statement.

“If you receive this message, do not follow the instructions or click on any links.”

If you receive an SMS message that you suspect is a scam, follow this advice:

  • Do not click on any links;
  • If you have clicked on a link and provided any card, bank or personal details, contact your bank immediately;
  • If you have lost any money through a scam, report it to the Police immediately;
  • Forward the text for free to 7726 so that Te Tari Taiwhenua, Department of Internal Affairs can investigate it.
