Ministry of Justice releases new ‘modernised’ juror videos

The Ministry of Justice has updated and modernised its juror videos to better reflect the diverse communities who use the New Zealand justice system.

In a statement, the Ministry said that thousands of New Zealanders gave their time to serve on jury trials every year.

“Jury service is an important way for New Zealanders to contribute to the delivery of justice, and make sure that the justice system is fair for all New Zealanders,” the Ministry said.

It said that following feedback from juror surveys, the Ministry had modernised its juror videos.

“As well as being shorter, the videos are now available in English, te reo Māori, Samoan and Mandarin and include introductions from both the Chief High Court Judge and the Chief District Court Judge.”

The videos help to explain the importance of the role of juries, the jury trial process and who jurors may see in the courtroom, including the judge, court staff and lawyers.

“The new videos are an important and valuable resource for people summoned as potential jurors, students and general members of the public who want to know more about how jury trials operate,” the Ministry said.

The videos will be available on the Ministry’s YouTube channel and DVD versions will also be supplied to all courthouses nationwide.
