Napier water treatment plant opens its doors to public

Napier City Council is inviting residents to step inside the Awatoto Wastewater Treatment Plant, to learn what happens to wastewater after it disappears down the drain and have their say on what happens to it in the future.

With new national environmental standards on the horizon and a comprehensive Wastewater Treatment Review underway, Council is rethinking how it treats and discharges the wastewater it manages from 93% of Napier’s homes and businesses. Community feedback will help guide upgrades, investment and environmental protection for Hawke Bay, the Council said.

Visitors to the plant will get to see the treatment process in action, talk to the experts and share their thoughts on the future of local wastewater management.

Tour dates:

Tuesday 29 July, 1pm–3pm

Saturday 2 August, 10am–12pm.

Spaces are limited so visit sayitnapier.nz to book a spot.

Other ways to have your say on the future management of wastewater treatment:

  • Visit sayitnapier.nz to learn more about the review and submit your feedback online.
  • Come along to Council’s ‘Water Matters’ evening on Tuesday 5 August, 5:30pm–7pm at Maraenui Golf Club. Talk with Council staff, ask questions and share your thoughts.
  • Collect a feedback form from the Customer Service Centre, Napier Library or Taradale Library if you can’t respond online.

The review began in November and looks at the real impact Napier’s current wastewater discharge has on Hawke Bay. It considers new environmental standards and what they mean for Napier. It also looks at innovative treatment technologies and alternative options, while balancing what the community wants with what’s affordable.

The final report, due to Hawke’s Bay Regional Council by the end of this year, will help shape Council’s future investment in wastewater treatment and environmental protection.

Feedback on the Wastewater Treatment Review closes at 5pm on Sunday 10 August.
