New appointee to Auckland Urban Development Office

Auckland Council has appointed Tyrone Newson as Head of Development for the newly established Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO).

The AUDO was established on 1 July, following a strategic merger of council-controlled organisation Eke Panuku Development Auckland with key internal Auckland Council teams, to create a centralised entity.

The Head of Development role is the final of the unit’s lead team to be confirmed. Mr Newson joins a group of experienced executives whose role is to drive and support urban regeneration and strategic growth across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the Council said in a statement.

He brings more than 30 years’ experience leading and managing the delivery of complex brownfield and greenfield projects in Auckland, Dubai and Singapore. This included spearheading international mega-developments such as the 31-acre mixed-use precinct IKEA-linked ten-level MyTOWN Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He also brings extensive experience engaging with iwi, central and local government during the planning, funding, and infrastructure delivery phases to enable large scale development.

“After almost 25 years since leaving the Hobson Eastern Bays Area Office of Auckland Council prior to amalgamation, I’m excited to begin this new chapter in my career by re-joining Auckland Council, into an established and highly regarded development team and to assist in delivering meaningful, community-focused outcomes across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland,” said Mr Newson, who will join the team in October.

“I’m proud to contribute my experience and insights to guide our future work and help shape developments that are sustainable, inclusive, and make a lasting difference for Aucklanders — now and into the future.”

“I am very happy to have Tyrone on board,” said AUDO General Manager, Patrick Dougherty.

“With his extensive experience in infrastructure and property development he will bring a fresh perspective to our work to secure the best development outcomes for council’s significant land holdings.”
