New digital seafarer licence well-received by sector

Maritime New Zealand says early sector feedback about its new digital seafarer licensing form, which was released in April, has been positive.

The form offers a simpler way to apply for a seafarer licence. It guides people step by step through what they need to provide and clearly shows what documents are required.

Via the new system, applicants now receive automatic status updates and can also track their application through the online status checker, making the process more transparent.

Maritime New Zealand says the new digital process is also improving efficiency.

“Applications are moving through the system faster than before, while still maintaining the right level of checks,” it stated.

“Early industry feedback has been encouraging with one user describing the new system as easy to use and welcoming the quicker turnaround times.

“The digital form is currently available for initial applications and renewals for Part 32 certificates and endorsements, as well as ship’s cook letters.”

Maritime New Zealand says more certificate types will be added in future phases.
