Affordable housing for Flaxmere’s older residents is a step closer, with the Te Pā Harakeke development progressing rapidly behind Flaxmere Pool, under the guidance of Hastings District Council.
With roofing already in place on one unit, framing underway on others, and several slabs poured, the Council says the 39 new senior rental homes are moving from plans to reality.
Site activity has ramped up, with three carpentry crews now working simultaneously to maintain momentum across the build. Progress is being made on everything from sub-floor piping and framing through to preparing cladding and mid-floor installation.
Civil works are also advancing. Sewer connections and manholes have been installed, Unison is well into the job of laying power infrastructure, and the building of carparks is also progressing well.
The Council says future-proofing remains a key design consideration, with provisions for insulation upgrades, and chairlift-ready power sockets. Design elements like decorative posts and kitchen joinery are also being finalised.
Hastings Mayor, Sandra Hazlehurst said the project reflected the district’s strong commitment to supporting older residents with housing that was safe, modern, and community focused.
“Te Pā Harakeke is a place designed with aroha and dignity – a place where our seniors can live with independence and connection in the heart of Flaxmere. It’s inspiring to see such rapid progress on a development that will make a real difference for our people.”
Supported by the Government’s Affordable Housing Fund, which is administered by Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the purpose-built units are being constructed by Alexander Construction (HB) Ltd on behalf of Hastings District Council.
Once complete, the development will include one- and two-bedroom single and double-storey units available for seniors to rent. Completion is expected by June 2026.
