A new library building in Kaikohe is a step closer with tenders now open for the contract to demolish buildings on the sites that once housed Save Mart second-hand shop and Petersen Motors show room.
Tenders for the demolition process will close on Thursday 6 June. The new library will be located on Raihara Street, about 80m away from its current location.
The Council says a design team has been appointed for the project and is working through concepts for the new facility. The draft design process is expected to take around five months.
After a demolition contractor has been appointed, a start date for this work will be publicised. Far North Holdings Limited (FNHL) is project managing the new build and will be working closely with hapū, iwi, the community, council staff and councillors throughout the project.
“The Kaikohe Library will remain open at its current location for the majority of the construction project. There is expected to be a temporary closure of the service when the library moves into the new space, but this will be well-advertised in advance to minimise disruption,” Council said in a statement.
“A start date for the construction of the new build will be confirmed once the design phase is complete.”
FNHL is the commercial and asset management arm of Far North District Council. It manages property, maritime and transport assets on behalf of Far North ratepayers and is focused on boosting investment and employment for the benefit of Northland communities.
