New opening hours for landslide community hub

Tauranga City Council has confirmed its He Maimai Aroha – Community Care Centre, a hub established on Maunganui Road following the Mauao landslide, is changing its opening hours.

The centre has provided a place for community members to come together, reflect, and pay respect to those who lost their lives since it opened on 25 January, three days after the Mauao landslide.

The venue’s new opening hours are:
Thursday, 5 February: 9am – 9pm
Friday, 6 February (Waitangi Day): 9am – 1pm
Saturday, 7 February: 9.30am – 1pm
Sunday, 8 February: 9.30am – 1pm

From Monday, 9 February, the centre’s weekday opening hours will be 9.30am – 5pm. The centre will open 9.30am – 1pm on weekends.

Visitors are welcome to leave messages of condolence, sit in shared silence, and find comfort among others affected by this event. Information on where to access local support services can be found here, Council said in a statement.

The Council has also relocated memorial message boards and non-organic mementos situated on the corner of Leinster Avenue and The Mall. It says all will be relocated to the Community Care Centre at 249 Maunganui Road.

“New message boards are now located on the grassed area on the corner of Marine Parade and Adams Avenue.”

“A long-term solution for the messages will be decided in due course in conversation with the community,” the Council stated.
