Takapuna will soon have a new residential parking zone – providing greater parking availability and flexibility for residents and visitors.
The zone will allow parking for up to two hours, with exemptions for residents who can purchase permits to park anytime.
Auckland Transport (AT) asked for public feedback on the proposal in October last year and received 525 responses.
After receiving feedback, AT reduced the size of the zone to cover the streets closest to the town centre where it has been hardest to find a car park.
The new amended parking zone will cover Bracken Avenue, Tennyson Avenue, Sanders Avenue and Park Avenue. It will also cover part of Burns Avenue, Huron Street, Northcroft Street and Byron Avenue.
Chair of Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, Aidan Bennett says the new zone strikes a good balance for the area.
“Community feedback clearly highlighted the impact a residential parking zone could have and resulted in AT considering a reduced zone to make sure just the hardest hit streets were targeted, making it easier for residents to find a park,” he said.
“The new two-hour time restriction will help balance parking options for business visitors and residents around our busy town centre. The new Toka Puia parking building on Huron Street is proving to be a wonderful new facility, providing other parking options for workers and visitors nearby.”
AT’s Group Manager of Parking Services, John Strawbridge said, “As Auckland grows, there are new demands on parking around busy town centres. Residential parking zones have worked well in areas all around Auckland to free up more spaces for people who live in the area, or visit.”
The parking zone is estimated to be in place from mid-2021. Letters will be sent to residents and businesses in the zone at least one month prior – with information on how to apply for permits.
