NZTE boss to head up Department of Conservation

Deputy Public Service Commissioner, Heather Baggott, has announced the appointment of Peter Chrisp as Director-General of Conservation and Chief Executive, Department of Conservation.

Ms Baggott said Mr Chrisp understands how conservation contributes to New Zealand’s identity, wellbeing and economy, and brings the leadership experience needed to support DOC to deliver on the Government’s priorities.

“Mr Chrisp brings extensive public and private sector leadership experience and a strong track record leading organisations,” said Ms Baggott.

“His leadership aligns well with DOC and its role in balancing environmental, economic and community outcomes.”

Mr Chrisp is currently the Chief Executive of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, a position he has held since 2010. He has extensive leadership experience across the public and private sectors, including senior executive roles in New Zealand and internationally. He has led large organisations in challenging environments and has worked closely with Ministers.

Ms Baggott said Mr Chrisp has the experience and judgement to lead DOC and deliver positive outcomes for New Zealanders and our natural environment.

“Mr Chrisp has worked alongside iwi, communities and stakeholders to deliver practical outcomes – and he understands where conservation, community interests and economic activity intersect.”

He has been appointed for five years from 13 July.
