Quarantine escapee arrested

Police have arrested a COVID-positive man who escaped from a managed quarantine facility in Ellerslie this morning.

“The man has been charged under the Health Order with failing to comply with order (Covid-19) and he has appeared in the Auckland District Court via a contactless video link this afternoon,” a Police spokesperson said in a statement.

“A judge has bailed him to return to a managed quarantine facility.

“The man’s family have been extremely cooperative with Police and we thank them for this.”

Police were notified of the man’s escape shortly after 10.30am this morning and quickly cordoned off an address in Ōtāhuhu in preparation of his arrest. The arrest was made with Police wearing full PPE.
