Rotorua Lakes Council calls for youth ambassadors

Rotorua Lakes Council is calling for passionate young people who want to play an active role in shaping their community to apply for a seat on the Rotorua Youth Council for 2026.

Following two successful terms over the past two years, the Youth Council has delivered positive outcomes for both its members and the wider community.

Applications are now open for locals aged 15 to 20 who are interested in leadership, personal development, and community service.

Mayor, Tania Tapsell, was a previous Youth Councillor herself and says the programme offers a great opportunity for local youth to make a real difference.

“We’ve been so impressed with the talent and leadership values of those who’ve served as Youth Councillors this year,” she said.

“This is programme gives young people a valuable chance to give back to their community, share their views directly with Council, develop skills and ensure the voices of youth are heard.”

The 2025 Youth Councillors worked on several key projects this year including submitting their ideas on the Rotorua Lakes Council Annual Plan 2025/26, continuing to develop the youth engagement strategy and a wellbeing and belonging campaign.

Current Councillor Fisher Wang, who served on the Youth Council in 2016, says the programme empowers young people to actively shape their communities.

“Rangatahi are passionate about complex issues that will have a big impact on their future and want to have their views acknowledged and considered,” says Cr Wang.

“Through the Youth Council programme you gain valuable leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, all while enhancing personal development and cultivating a sense of empowerment and commitment to positive change in your community.”

Applications will close on 31 October. For more information and to apply, visit: https://rlc.net.nz/YouthCouncil.
