Ruapehu District Council Mayor, Weston Kirton was special guest at the Waimarino and Whakapapa Fire Brigades Honours Night in Ohakune on Saturday, where volunteer members were recognised for their dedicated service to the community.
Reflecting on the evening, Mayor Kirton expressed his deep admiration for the brigade members’ unwavering commitment.
“It was a privilege to be able to attend at this event and to celebrate the exceptional service of our Ruapehu volunteer firefighters,” he said.
“These individuals go above and beyond, making a significant personal sacrifice in terms of their time and energy to protect and serve their communities.”
He highlighted the unique qualities required of volunteer fire brigade members.
“Volunteers like these are a very special type of person. They commit to ongoing training, remain available 24/7, and respond to not just fires but also car crashes and other distressing incidents. Their work is both physically demanding and emotionally taxing.”
Mayor Kirton also noted the importance of the fire brigades as an essential community service.
“Our volunteers are a vital lifeline for our community. We depend on their bravery and dedication, and we owe them our deepest gratitude for their selfless contributions.”
The Honours Night was a celebration of the years of dedication and service provided by these volunteers, recognising their invaluable role in keeping the community safe.
The following members of the Waimarino and Whakapapa Brigades were awarded for their service.
- Pete Pehi Waimarino 2-year silver bar for 9 years, and a 2-year silver bar for 11 years. In June 2025, Pete will complete 13 years of service.
- John Chapman Waimarino received a 3-year certificate, 5-year medal, and a 2-year silver bar for completing seven years of service. In October 2025, John will complete nine years of service.
- Clark McCarthy Waimarino 3-year certificate, 5-year medal, 2-year silver bar for 7 years, a 2-year silver bar for 9 years, and another 2-year silver bar for 11 years. In December 2025, Clark will complete 13 years of service.
- Neil Ranford Whakapapa 2-year gold bar for 27 years, and another 2-year gold bar for 29 years. In September 2025, Neil will complete 31 years of service.
- Heni Butler Waimarino and Whakapapa 2-year silver bar for 13 years, and 2-year silver bar for 15 years. Long Service Good Conduct Medal nominated for 14 years’ service. In August 2025 Heni will complete 17 years of service.
- Anna Atchley Whakapapa 3-year certificate
- Sam Highet Whakapapa 3-year certificate
- Katie Snowden Whakapapa 3-year certificate
- Neil Ranford Whakapapa 1 gold bar for 12 years, and 1 gold bar for 28 years’ service. The gold bars have been added to Neil’s Long Service Good Conduct Medal ribbon.
