Selwyn District has been recognised as a Tree City of the World, joining an international network of cities and districts committed to protecting and growing their urban forests.
Selwyn is the fifth council in New Zealand to gain the status, reflecting the Council’s long-term policies and programmes that protect existing trees and look to expand the tree canopy in public places.
“The Council’s tree policies and programmes aim to support healthier neighbourhoods and keep Selwyn a great place to live,” Council said in a statement.
“It also aligns Selwyn with other leaders in New Zealand and around the world, confirming the Council’s commitment to protecting and growing the tree canopy in the district and providing opportunities for the community to take part.”
The Council runs regular tree planting days where residents can get involved.
The next planting day will be held at Whitecliffs Bridge on Saturday 18 April, from 10am to 2pm. Find more details and register.
