Sports funding round to kick off

Sports organisations across Tāmaki Makaurau will soon be able to apply for a slice of $13.6 million funding through Auckland Council’s Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund (SRFIF).

The 2024/25 funding round is drawn from the $150 million SRFIF provided through the Council’s 2021-2031 10-year Budget.

Planning, Environment and Parks Committee Chair, Councillor Richard Hills says the funding will help more Aucklanders to participate in community sport and recreation activities.

“Many Aucklanders of all ages and backgrounds love to take part in sports and stay active.”

“A major aim of this fund is to invest in the changing ways people choose to participate in sport and recreation and to partner with other funders to address the needs of our growing communities,” he said.

Applications for the Fund will open on 13 November and close on 29 January 2024.

Council’s Active Communities General Manager, Dave Stewart says the multi-million-dollar investment recognises the significant role that grassroots sports organisations play in Auckland’s sport and recreation sector.

“Auckland Council encourages sports organisations that need major building or infrastructure work done to apply through the fund.”

“The last funding round saw a broad range of projects funded, from tennis court upgrades, to new lights for a netball centre, to a community hub redevelopment at a surf life saving club.

“All applications will be assessed on their alignment with a set of criteria with a specific focus of achievability,” said Mr Stewart.

Who should apply? The SRFIF is contestable and open to non-council organisations for significant facility development. It has a focus on communities that are in the greatest need of investment and large-scale community sport facility development projects that can leverage additional investment. The full eligibility and funding priorities are explained here.

Key dates The 2024/25 funding round will be open for applications between 13 November 2023 and 29 January 2024, with successful applicants invited through to the second stage of the process on 18 March 2024. Funding decisions will be made by the relevant Governing Body committee in August 2024.
