Sustainable new office development for Hastings central

A state-of-the-art, engineered mass timber-built office complex will soon rise at 300 Lyndon Road, transforming the former Heretaunga House site into a flagship for innovation, sustainability and local investment, says Hastings District Council.

Owned and constructed by Tumu Property, the four-storey, 5,000sqm commercial building is set to deliver quality office space in the heart of the city.

Tumu director, Hamish Frame said the development was a proud milestone for the business and the region.

“We’re proud of this project – it’s a strong vote of confidence in Hastings showing what can be achieved through local innovation.”

“This is more than just a building – it is a platform to showcase the future of cost competitive sustainable construction. At its heart will be TimberSpan, our locally manufactured mass timber system. It will form the strong, sustainable skeleton of the building and contribute to creating spaces that look beautiful, feel natural, and support workplace wellbeing,” he said.

Following a competitive tender process run by Hastings District Council, Tumu purchased the property and was awarded the development opportunity. The company will establish its new headquarters across 600sqm of space within the new building.

Hastings District Council will also lease 1,950 square metres, consolidating around 80 staff currently located across the city in three separate locations into one central office.

Council says it selected the sale and leaseback arrangement as the most cost-effective solution for ratepayers.

“It enables private business to invest in the development of a quality office building, adding capacity to a constrained office accommodation market in Hastings without Council needing to invest. It also unlocked a valuable opportunity to work with a trusted developer to deliver centrally located, quality commercial space for Hastings,” it said in a statement.

Hastings Mayor, Sandra Hazlehurst said the development was a “win-win” for the city.

“Our partnership with Tumu is a great example of local leadership driving progress. We are getting an efficient, fit-for-purpose base for our team, and at the same time, supporting a local business that is bringing sustainable construction and modern commercial space into the heart of Hastings,” she said.

Construction on the new building is expected to begin later this year.
