The next step in planning for the future of the Tōmoana Showgrounds has been reached with the creation of a new charitable trust to oversee the facility.
At last night’s launch of the 2024 Hawke’s Bay A&P Show, Hastings Mayor, Sandra Hazlehurst; Waipatu representative, Ngahiwi Tomoana and A & P Society past president, Simon Collin signed the deed for the new trust.
“It’s been quite a journey to get to this point and I want to thank everyone involved. Having the trust formed is a significant milestone and has been a complex process – I appreciate everyone’s efforts and hard work over the past two to three years,” said Mayor Hazlehurst.
“The showgrounds are the jewel in the crown of our district – they are the gateway to our city and play an important role in bringing our rural and urban communities together, as well as having a strong historical connection to the Waipatu community.
“With Simon, Ngahiwi and myself as trustees, all those with a particular interest in this important landholding are represented – our rural community and mana whenua, the wider Hastings and Hawke’s Bay community, and the long-term users who call this venue home – the Hawke’s Bay A and P Society.”
Hastings District Council purchased the showgrounds from the A&P Society last year. The next steps will involve planning for the development of a Reserve Management Plan for the area – giving direction on how it will be managed and used over the coming years, Mayor Hazlehurst said.
“As we look to the future, this venue will continue to showcase and celebrate our rural community within our urban environment, highlighting the role and importance of our primary sector for our economy.”
“As the home of Horse of the Year, which also contributes to our economy, we want to help bring the vision of Equestrian Sports New Zealand to life, as well as ensuring it continues to serve the needs of long-time users such as our precious Farmers’ Market and the A & P Show, which after a powhiri this morning was set to welcome hundreds of school children today – learning more about rural life and traditions.
“This land is a huge asset for our district and I look forward to the planning process that will help shape a prosperous and sustainable future for this beautiful place,” she said.
