Applications for the Tuia Rangatahi programme for 2025 are now open, giving young Māori the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills.
A national programme, each year mayors across the country select one or two Māori rangatahi from their rohe to mentor on a one-to-one basis, to encourage and enhance their leadership skills.
Participants also get to go on a number of leadership wananga (forums) throughout the year and may also be invited to attend certain community events.
They are also expected to get involved in a community contribution project over the year.
This year’s Tuia were Harono Hokianga and Shannon Nohokau, and they said they both got a lot out of the experience.
“One of my highlights of the year was building a relationship with the mayor and councillors,” said Shannon.
Harono said she particularly enjoyed meeting new people and showing them where she came from.
“I’m very proud to come from Hastings and it was great to be able to share my place on one of the wananga held here.”
The programme is open to applications from rangatahi aged 18 to 25-years-old who come from the Heretaunga district, and who are showing leadership and actively contributing to the well-being of their community.
Applications will close Friday, 24 January, 2025.
