Urban farm and composting initiative, Kaicycle, has won the Community Supreme Award at the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.
The annual awards recognise the contribution of voluntary and not-for-profit organisations in Wellington across the arts, heritage, health, well-being, sport and environment.
Founded in 2015 with support from Wellington City Council, Kaicycle has grown to be a thriving urban farm and composting initiative in Newtown, aiming to develop a resilient food system for Te Whanganui-a-Tara by connecting people, sharing skills and knowledge, and collecting compostable food scraps from businesses by bicycle.
Mayor, Andrew Little says all the finalists deserve recognition and acknowledgement for the amazing work they’re all doing.
“With over 80 finalists for these awards, it really shines a spotlight on the remarkable mahi and invaluable contribution these groups and individuals provide to meet the diverse needs within our community,” he said.
“The overall Supreme Award winner Kaicycle is a great example of a small idea growing to become a larger successful model by fostering relationships, embracing collaboration and collectively advocating for a better local food system in the capital.”
Other category winners are: Arts & Culture – TuTagata Secondary Poly Festival, Wellington Komiti; Education & Child/Youth Development – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wellington; Health & Wellbeing – Good Bitches Baking Wellington; Heritage & Environment – Kaicycle; Sports & Leisure – Tawa Junior Rugby Club, and Rising Star winner Leififi Boxing Gym (LBG).
The winners were selected from over 81 finalists across the categories, with judges considering key factors including impact on the community, innovation and creativity, and effectiveness.
The six category award winners go on to represent Wellington in the regional awards later in the year.
