Hamilton’s Central Library is welcoming more visitors through its doors following the opening of Te Paataka and the completion of its new façade, with average daily visitation increasing by more than 66%.
The Central Library façade project replaced a water-damaged façade that had reached the end of its life, creating a new presence in Garden Place.
Hamilton City Council Community Services Unit Director, Rebecca Whitehead said the increase in visitation was encouraging and reflected the important role the library plays in the heart of the city.
“It’s great to see more people coming through the doors and enjoying everything the library has to offer,” said Ms Whitehead.
“Renee’s experience shows how a visit to the library can become part of a central city experience by grabbing a coffee, spending time in Garden Place, shopping or enjoying time with family.
“Transformation isn’t just about buildings and infrastructure. It’s about the experiences people have when they’re here and the reasons they choose to come back,” she said.
Among its regular visitors is Hamilton resident, Renee Robertson, who has been coming to Central Library for more than 30 years and now brings her two-year-old daughter each week.
“The library is a regular visit for us. My two-year-old and I visit at least once a week, sometimes more if we are in town,” Renee said.
As regular visitors, Renee and her daughter watched the new façade take shape.
“We saw the construction unfold on a weekly basis. I’m in the CBD quite often during the week, so it was cool to see it slowly come together.
“The new façade feels more inviting, and I love that the lighting can now showcase local artists.”
For Renee, the library has remained part of her life even as the way she uses it has changed.
“I’ve been coming here for 30-plus years and love the fact that I can now bring my daughter in for Story Time and to browse books.”
