Waimakariri Mayor thanks responders following wild weather

Waimakariri District Council Mayor, Dan Gordon, has today thanked local first responders who he says have worked tirelessly over the weekend responding to damage caused by extreme winds.

“The MainPower line workers, the roading crews, fire and emergency, police, our water technicians, Civil Defence, NZRT12 staff and more – I want to thank you,” the Mayor said in a statement.

“The work you did over the weekend, in extreme weather conditions, for the benefit of the District is outstanding.

“This has been a huge event that caused destruction and damage across both Waimakariri and Hurunui.”

The Mayor says MainPower have a mammoth job ahead of them and today as they work to reconnect properties.

Council stood up its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) over the weekend to provide support to residents and coordinate volunteers to door knock at-risk people.

“Today we’re one step closer to being back to normal thanks to your efforts,” said Mayor Gordon.

“There’s still some clean up to do, and some properties remain without power, but I know the work is continuing today.

“If anyone out there needs support please reach out and call the Council on 0800 965 468 and ask to talk to our Civil Defence team. We’re here to help.”
